Doctors Hospital appoints new officer

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota has a new second-in-command, with Valerie Powell-Stafford signing on as its chief operating officer.
She comes to Doctors Hospital from Community Hospital of New Port Richey, where she served as assistant administrator. Both facilities are part of HCA, the Nashville-based company that owns 168 hospitals and 112 outpatient centers.
Previously, Powell-Stafford worked at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, where she managed seven clinical practices. She also held administrative posts at the St. Joseph Health System in Tampa and at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
She is the immediate past president of the American College of Healthcare Executives’ West Florida Chapter and received its Regent’s Award in 2006 for her work at Moffitt.
Powell-Stafford has a bachelor’s degree in health administration from Indiana university and a master’s degree in health sciences administration from the University of Michigan. She and her husband and two children live in the Sarasota area.
Linda Lemon-Steiner, the former chief operating officer, was promoted to an HCA division vice president position in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Doctors Hospital is a 168-bed facility at Bee Ridge and Cattlemen Road. Its major features include a recently redesigned orthopedic unit, a cardiac catheterization lab and an emergency room.
